¿Cómo llegaste a ser ilustrador y editor en Kabo&Bero?
Desde pequeño siempre dibujaba y hacía manualidades. Jamás pensé que en un futuro podría “vivir” de esto. Estudié Arquitectura y luego me especialicé en educación, aunque siempre sacaba algún hueco para hacer alguna ilustración a algún amigo.
El verano pasado decidí crearme un nombre artístico y redes sociales para subir poco a poco las creaciones que hacía. Esto evolucionó a que a finales de 2023 mi novio y yo creamos la editorial. Yo me iba a encargar de la parte creativa: maquetación, ilustraciones de la cubierta, diseño de la web… etc. Fue entonces cuando me planteé seriamente si tendría que profesionalizar más mis redes y poner foco en esa parte artística que estaba en un segundo plano. En ello estoy ahora mismo.
A veces la vida te pone oportunidades frente a ti que no puedes dejar escapar.
Tu estilo es bastante distintivo. ¿Qué influencias dirías que predominan en tu obra?
Me encanta esta pregunta, porque lo primero que se me ha venido a la mente ha sido el programa Art Attack. Pasaba los fines de semana creando todas aquellas manualidades. Creo que gracias a este programa le doy tanto valor a lo tangible y, como la tecnología me encanta, siempre intento mezclar lo digital con lo físico.
Por otra parte, he tenido la suerte de crecer en una familia de artistas, entre ellos mi padre, que también pinta. Desde pequeño siempre me han llevado a las exposiciones de pintura de mis tíos y primos. También recuerdo los veranos en casa de mi tío Manolo, que me encantaba ayudarlo con las manualidades de decoración para diferentes eventos. Evidentemente todos ellos me han influido, y mucho.
La editorial Kabo&Bero se centra en temas LGTBIQ+ y en la divulgación psicoeducativa. Trabajar en estos ámbitos te resultará muy gratificante…
Como profesor de tecnología en institutos puedo decir que aún queda mucho por hacer en los centros con respecto al colectivo. Es muy duro ver cómo el alumnado sigue sufriendo la LGTBIfobia tanto dentro como fuera del aula. La editorial nace de todo esto, de la necesidad de crear material tanto para el alumnado como para familias y docentes. Nos queremos acercar a la juventud a través de la ficción, donde puedan conectar con los personajes y puedan tener referentes. Todo esto irá acompañado de material didáctico, que publicaremos para el curso que viene. Así los docentes podrán trabajar el contenido de los libros en el aula.
Recientemente has creado postales a mano para Eurovisión 2024 con la icónica imagen de «Nebulossa». ¿Quizá te motivó la temática de la canción como himno de liberación?
La candidatura de este año me parece una fantasía. Tanto el mensaje como la imagen de Nebulossa es muy potente. RTVE animó a los fans, a través de una publicación de Instagram, a que mandaran sus postales de apoyo al grupo y tuve la idea de crear mi versión. La subí a X y la acogida fue maravillosa. Pero ahora que lo dices, fue una manera de liberar el arte, ya que no había subido a redes nada parecido anteriormente.
Nos ha interesado mucho vuestra apuesta por la divulgación psicoeducativa, ¿ves posibles colaboraciones con Kripties Fundación, también interesados en el arte como vehículo de integración social?
Nosotros estamos empezando, con lo que cualquier colaboración que vaya surgiendo y aporte a nuestro proyecto será bienvenida.

How did you become an illustrator and editor at Kabo&Bero?
Since I was a child I have always drawn and made things. I never thought that I would be able to «make a living» from it in the future. I studied architecture and then specialised in education, although I always found time to do some illustration for a friend.
Last summer I decided to create an artistic name and social networks to gradually upload my creations. This led to my boyfriend and I starting a publishing company at the end of 2023. I was going to be in charge of the creative part: layout, cover illustrations, web design… etc. It was then that I seriously considered making my networks more professional and concentrating on the artistic part, which was in the background. That’s what I’m working on at the moment.
Sometimes life puts opportunities in front of you that you can’t let go of.
Your style is quite distinctive, what influences would you say are predominant in your work?
I love this question because the first thing that came to mind was the Art Attack programme. I used to spend my weekends making all these crafts. I think it’s because of that programme that I have such a strong appreciation for the tangible, and because I love technology, I always try to mix the digital with the physical.
On the other hand, I was lucky enough to grow up in a family of artists, including my father, who also paints. As a child, I was always taken to my uncles’ and cousins’ painting exhibitions. I also remember spending summers at my uncle Manolo’s house, where I loved helping him with the decorations for various events. Obviously they all influenced me, and a lot.
The Kabo&Bero publishing house focuses on LGTBIQ+ issues and psycho-educational outreach. You will find working in these areas very rewarding…
As a high school technology teacher, I can say that there is still a lot of work to be done in schools regarding this group. It is very hard to see how students continue to suffer from LGTBIphobia both inside and outside the classroom. The publishing house was born out of all this, out of the need to create material for students as well as for families and teachers. We want to reach young people through fiction, where they can relate to the characters and have a point of reference. All this will be accompanied by didactic material that we will publish for next year. In this way, teachers will be able to work on the content of the books in the classroom.
You recently created handmade postcards for Eurovision 2024 featuring the iconic image of «Nebulossa». Perhaps you were motivated by the song’s theme as a liberation anthem?
This year’s entry seems like a fantasy to me. Both the message and the image of Nebulossa are very powerful. RTVE made an Instagram post asking fans to send in their postcards in support of the group, and I had the idea to create my version. I uploaded it to X and the response was wonderful. But now that you mention it, it was a way of liberating the art, because I hadn’t uploaded anything like it before.
We were very interested in your commitment to psycho-educational dissemination, do you see possible collaborations with Kripties Fundación, which is also interested in art as a vehicle for social integration?
We are just starting out, so any collaboration that emerges and contributes to our project will be welcome.
